National nuclear safety regulators will have more independence and a new peer-review system under an amended EU Nuclear Safety Directive which was approved by the European Council says World Nuclear News.

The revised directive, which still needs to be formally adopted by the European Council, introduces EU-wide nuclear safety objectives that aim to limit the consequences of a potential nuclear accident as well as address the safety of the entire lifecycle of nuclear installations, including on-site emergency preparedness and response, says NucNet.

The diversification of nuclear fuel supplies could become a condition for any new investment in nuclear power stations to be built in the EU, especially when using non-EU technology, the European Commission says in its European Energy Security Strategy, says NucNet.
