Located in the province of Cáceres, in the district known as Campo Arañuelo, the Almaraz plant is cooled by water from the Arrocampo reservoir, on the river Tajo.
The plant site occupies an area of 1,683 hectares in the municipal areas of Almaraz, Saucedilla, Serrejón and Romangordo, where thinly wooded pastures and irrigated crops are the most habitual types of land use. The land lends itself more to grazing than it does to crops, and there are abundant holly oak and cork plantations.
Earth movement began in 1972, and in May 1973 the first concrete was laid at the site. The first group initiated operation in 1981 and the second in 1983. In the case of this plant, 81% of the total construction and assembly work was carried out by Spanish companies.
Nobody is more aware of the extremely important contribution that the construction and start-up of the two groups of Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant has made to the economic and social development of the region than the local populations. During the construction period the accumulated employment figures exceeded 30,000 man-years, with a peak of 4,500 workers being reached in 1976.
Over the more than twenty years that the plant has been in commercial operation, the refuelling outages have required the contracting of an average 1,200 workers and have implied a budget of 1,200 million pesetas per outage.
In addition to its outstanding contribution to employment in the area, the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant has collaborated and participated directly in the modernisation of infrastructures and in the organisation of social events. In some cases this has been from a position of anonymity, with the plant being just another member of the local community, while in others it has been as the promoter of initiatives contributing to wider knowledge of the region, such as the photography competition "Nature in Extremadura" or the Navalmoral-Almaraz NPP Popular Half Marathon, as well as sponsorship of cultural events, publications and other activities.
In order for everybody to have the opportunity to learn what the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant is, and what it does, an Information Centre was installed from the very beginning of the project. The objective of this Centre, which has recently been modernised, is to explain the main characteristics of nuclear energy and to show how the installations operate. The Centre receives 12,000 visitors per year on average, this meaning that almost 600,000 people have visited it to date.
Hiberdrola with 53%, Endesa (36%) and Gas Natural (11%) are the owners of Almaraz I and II.
During 2009, the unity I generated 7152.50 millions of kWh. This unity had in June 2010 an cumulative gross of 197.979.160 MWh.
