Foro Nuclear welcomes the positive report from the nuclear regulator on the continued operation of Almaraz until 2030
July 16, 2026The report issued by Spain’s nuclear regulator (CSN) confirms that the Almaraz nuclear power plant meets all the necessary conditions for its two units to continue operating beyond 2027 and 2028. Foro Nuclear considers this assessment a recognition of the plant’s operational excellence, the investments made over the years, and the commitment of its workforce. It also represents a key element for the Government to authorize the plant’s operation until 2030.
Foro Nuclear welcomes the report issued by the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), which confirms that the Almaraz nuclear power plant meets the necessary conditions to continue operating safely until June 2030. The opinion of the Spanish nuclear regulator, based on rigorous and independent technical assessment, should constitute an essential element in the decision to be taken by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO).
This assessment is fully consistent with Almaraz’s strong operational track record, its current periodic safety review and its international recognition. In 2025, Almaraz once again achieved the highest rating awarded by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), placing it among the world’s highest-performing nuclear power plants in terms of safety, reliability and operational excellence.
The continued operation of Almaraz in the coming years will help strengthen security of electricity supply, support the stability of the power system and contribute to the achievement of climate objectives. Its firm, dispatchable and carbon-free electricity production is particularly valuable in a context of increasing electrification, growing integration of renewable energy sources and the need to enhance energy autonomy.
Foro Nuclear trusts that the final decision will recognize the strategic, social and regional value of Almaraz: a safe and reliable facility that contributes to system stability, competitiveness and decarbonization, while supporting high-quality employment, economic activity and territorial cohesion in Extremadura.
Its firm and synchronous generation strengthens grid stability, and its continued operation would be aligned with the recommendations of the European Commission and with the approach adopted by countries such as the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, France, Switzerland and the United States, where comparable nuclear power plants, such as North Anna, have been licensed to operate for up to 80 years.
