March 20, 2026

Marta Ugalde Martínez, until now Director of Nuclear Oversight and International Coordination at Almaraz-Trillo Nuclear Power Plants, and with a distinguished record of international leadership at the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), steps into the role of President of the Spanish Nuclear Industry Forum (Foro Nuclear).

At their meeting on 20 March in Madrid, the General Assembly of Members unanimously elected Marta Ugalde Martínez as the new President of Foro Nuclear. With this appointment, Foro Nuclear reinforces its commitment to leadership grounded in technical authority, international experience and strategic vision.

A nuclear engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and holder of a General Management Program from IESE Business School, Marta Ugalde has more than 25 years of experience in the nuclear sector. In her most recent role as Director of Nuclear Oversight and International Coordination at Almaraz-Trillo Nuclear Power Plants she held senior positions in nuclear oversight and corporate governance, contributing decisively to the international recognition of the Spanish nuclear sector.

Her professional profile is characterized by strong technical authority developed in highly demanding regulatory and operational environments, as well as by a strategic outlook focused on continuous improvement, safety culture and excellence in nuclear plant performance.

At the international level she has held prominent leadership roles within the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), where she chaired the nuclear industry representatives group composed of 21 organizations from 16 countries across three continents. She also served on the Advisory Committee to the Nuclear Business Directors of WANO Paris, which contributes to strategic reflection on safety and operational excellence at the global level.

For Marta Ugalde, representing the whole of the Spanish nuclear industry, “highly prestigious and recognized as a benchmark of exceptional quality,” is a “true privilege”. Upon assuming the Presidency, she expressed her gratitude to Ignacio Araluce, her predecessor, for the work carried out at the head of the organization over the past nine years, and for his contribution to strengthening Foro Nuclear and defending the Spanish nuclear sector in a particularly complex content.

In this new stage, the new President of Foro Nuclear emphasized the importance of a clear and well-grounded position for the sector. “We are at a decisive moment. Nuclear energy has proven to be an essential pillar in addressing major global challenges, providing an affordable source of energy that brings stability to the system and guarantees energy supply while demonstrating extraordinary climate and geopolitical resilience,” she stated.

Through constant and constructive dialogue with different stakeholders, “we will continue to promote the leadership of the Spanish nuclear sector and work to ensure the continued operation of our nuclear power plants, which rank among the best in the world,” she added.

Marta Ugalde will serve as President of Foro Nuclear for the next two years, with the possibility of extending her mandate for successive terms in accordance with the organization’s statutes.
