38 countries support the goal to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050
A growing coalition of countries has pledged support for the goal of tripling global nuclear energy capacity by 2050, with the number of governments endorsing the initiative now reaching 38.
The commitment was reinforced at the Nuclear Energy Summit 2026 in Paris, where Belgium, Brazil, China and Italy joined the Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy. Their endorsement expands the international coalition supporting nuclear power as part of the global strategy to address climate change, strengthen energy security and ensure reliable electricity supply.
The declaration was originally launched at COP28 in Dubai in 2023, when an initial group of countries called for global nuclear capacity to at least triple by mid-century in order to help achieve net-zero emissions and keep the 1.5°C climate target within reach.
Belgium, Brazil, China and Italy are the latest countries to join the declaration
Speaking at this summit, Sama Bilbao y León, Director General of World Nuclear Association, said: "Today's announcement adds tremendous momentum to the global coalition supporting the declaration to triple nuclear capacity by 2050. The ambition of the countries joining the declaration is recognized in our World Nuclear Outlook Report, which shows nuclear capacity can exceed the tripling goal if government targets are met. Collectively, governments and industry must now turn this ambition into action and deliver."

Support for the initiative has continued to grow as governments increasingly recognize the role of nuclear energy in providing clean, reliable and scalable power while complementing other low-carbon technologies. According to the World Nuclear Association, the expanding group of signatories demonstrates increasing global momentum behind nuclear energy as a key component of the energy transition.
The current list of countries supporting the declaration includes major nuclear producers and newcomers: Armenia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, El Salvador, Finland, France, Ghana, Hungary, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Republic of Rwanda, Senegal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, UAE, UK and USA.
