A new Swedish nuclear project selects Rolls-Royce SMR
Swedish nuclear project company Videberg Kraft has selected Rolls-Royce SMR as the technology supplier for its planned nuclear project on Sweden’s Värö Peninsula, near the Ringhals site. The iniciative envisages the deployment of three Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), marking a significant step in Sweden’s programme to build new nuclear capacity.
The Swedish selection follows a competitive process in which Rolls-Royce SMR was finally chosen. Videberg Kraft is jointly owned by utility Vattenfall and industrial energy company Industrikraft, and was established to develop new nuclear generation to support Sweden’s growing electricity demand.

According to Videberg Kraft, Rolls-Royce SMR’s technology was selected following an extensive evaluation of technical, commercial and strategic criteria. The company highlighted the reactor design’s maturity, the strength of the supply chain, and the potential benefits of fleet deployment.
Rolls-Royce SMR Chief Executive Chris Cholerton described the decision as a major milestone for the company and evidence of growing confidence in its SMR technology. The selection follows recent successes for Rolls-Royce SMR in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic, strengthening its position in the European SMR market.
SMR’s technology in Sweden was selected following an extensive evaluation of technical, commercial and strategic criteria.
Detailed project planning and licensing activities will now continue. If developed as planned, the project would represent Sweden’s first new nuclear power plant development in more than four decades and form part of the country’s strategy to ensure long-term energy security, industrial competitiveness and low-carbon electricity generation.Today, there are six nuclear power plants in operation in the country that produce 29% of the electricty.
