GDES reaches a milestone with decommissioning work at Barsebäck, the Swedish nuclear power plant

The Spanish multinational GD Energy Services (GDES), a member of the Spanish Nuclear Industry Forum, has successfully completed the post-segmentation work on the Barsebäck reactor pressure vessel. This is the first time it decommissions a 600MW reactor in Sweden, a milestone for the company.

The Valencia-based business group was awarded a contract to support the decommissioning of the Barsebäck and Oskarshamm nuclear power plants. This is GDES' first decommissioning contract in the Scandinavian country. Recently, it successfully completed the segmentation work on the drywell head and the reactor pressure vessel head, as well as the post-segmentation at the Barsebäck-1 nuclear power plant.

The Spanish multinational company GD Energy Services (GDES) was chosen to work in the decommissioning of Swedish nuclear power plants Barsebäck & Oskarshamn

The project, awarded to GDES by  Uniper Anlagenservice GmbH, started in July 2020 and will last four years. As exploained by the Spanish company, it is being executed in two separate phases (2 years at the Barsebäck plant and 2 years at the Oskarshamn plant) and involves the cutting of different parts from the dismantling of the reactors at both plants, optimizing the technological processes and creating a unified technical approach for the execution of both phases.

The dismantling strategy in this high-engineering project is based on a combination of manual mechanical/thermal and remote robot cutting. The technological "heart" of the project, informs GDES, is the robot that is performing remote-controlled, dry thermal cutting of the four vesels at the Barsebäck and Oskarshamn power plants.

GD Energy Services is a group of companies with international reach. The staff is composed of over 1,700 professionals in countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Brazil, Panama, Mexico and the United States.

GDES has over 40 years of experience in the nuclear sector, both in the construction of the main Spanish nuclear power plants during the '70s and '80s, in their maintenance, and now in their decommissioning at the Vandellós I and José Cabrera nuclear power plants (among other projects.) Additionally, GDES has worked in decommissioning projects in Italy, the United Kingdom, France, and now Sweden.
