As the world grapples with the dual challenges of climate change and rising energy demand, nuclear energy is emerging as a pivotal solution. Recent developments at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, and the U.S. unveil a shared global vision to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050, underscoring its role in achieving net-zero emissions and bolstering energy security.

During the COP29 UN climate conference, six new countries—El Salvador, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo, Nigeria, and Turkey—joined the Ministerial Declaration advocating a tripling of global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. This expansion brings the total number of signatories to 31, including key energy players such as the USA, Canada, France, and the UK.

The declaration emphasizes nuclear energy's critical role in achieving global net-zero emissions and limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C. It also highlights the advantages of nuclear energy, including its compatibility with renewable energy, minimal land footprint, and potential applications in decarbonizing industrial sectors.

Kazakhstan, one of the latest signatories, cited nuclear energy as vital to achieving its carbon neutrality goals by 2060 while ensuring a reliable energy supply. Sama Bilbao y León, Director General of the World Nuclear Association, hailed the declaration as evidence of nuclear energy's growing recognition as an essential component of global energy strategies. She stated, “Leadership is about preparing for the world’s energy needs not only in 2050 but well beyond.”

This commitment aligns with broader global efforts to integrate nuclear energy into climate action strategies. For the first time, a major COP decision—last year’s Global Stocktake—acknowledged nuclear energy among the solutions to meet the Paris Agreement goals. Furthermore, the IAEA and Belgium co-chaired a Nuclear Energy Summit in March, emphasizing the potential of nuclear energy to reduce fossil fuel use and improve energy security.

Interest has also risen in the private sector, with global banks and technology companies investing heavily in nuclear initiatives. Companies such as Microsoft and Google, alongside major financial institutions, are backing projects to scale up nuclear capacity, demonstrating confidence in its reliability and sustainability.

U.S. Roadmap: ambitious plans to triple capacity

In the United States, the Biden administration released a detailed roadmap to triple U.S. nuclear power capacity from 97 GW to 300 GW by 2050. The plan aims to deploy 35 GW of new capacity by 2035 and sustain an annual addition of 15 GW through 2040, leveraging a mix of new reactor construction, plant restarts, and upgrades to existing facilities.

The roadmap identifies specific pathways for expansion:

  • Large-Scale Reactors: Adding reactors to existing sites to capitalize on existing infrastructure and community support. A Department of Energy study has identified 41 sites capable of accommodating 60 GW of new capacity.
  • Small Modular Reactors (SMRs): Offering flexibility for electricity generation, industrial heat, and hydrogen production.

Ali Zaidi, the White House National Climate Adviser, emphasized the readiness of the U.S. industrial sector to execute this ambitious plan, citing recent advancements in reactor technology, regulatory frameworks, and workforce development.

The strategy builds on bipartisan support for nuclear energy, which recently led to legislation enabling faster licensing for advanced reactors and innovative fuel technologies. Incoming President-elect Donald Trump has also expressed support for expanding nuclear energy, signaling continuity in efforts to bolster the sector.
