Ontario Power takes a turn on nuclear energy with a new public education campaign
Under the name “Recast Nuclear” Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is launching a campaign which uses the power of movies as the main key to overcome misperceptions of the nuclear world.
As OPG declares, nuclear power has been stigmatized over the years through its negative and misinformed representation in TV shows, movies and pop culture. With this new initiative, the Canadian enterprise plans to transform the image of nuclear energy by growing its understanding and public acceptance, two essential elements for meeting future clean energy needs.
The project recasts nuclear energy as the safe and reliable source we need to fight climate change and secure our clean energy future. Through a series of themed film posters, trailers, and digital and radio ads, OPG presents the unique benefits nuclear power has to offer.
In Canada, nuclear energy avoids 80 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equal to removing 15 million cars from the road. Moreover, nuclear is a steady power source that keeps running 24/7/365 regardless of the weather and daylight.
Nuclear power meets more than half of Ontario’s energy needs with no direct greenhouse gas emissions
“This education campaign aims to recast nuclear power as a true hero of our clean energy mix. We hope this will grow understanding and acceptance of this beneficial technology that is so important to our economic and environmental wellbeing”, said Kathy Nosich, OPG’s Vice-President of Stakeholder Relations.
“For years, popular culture has distorted perceptions about nuclear power with false narratives that served to stoke fear”
OPG firmly believes that there is much more to be done to educate and raise awareness of nuclear energy’s essential role for the future. As the enterprise claims: “Unfairly vilified by the movies and pop culture, it’s time to recast nuclear as the star of our clean energy mix”.
