Tech giants advocate for nuclear energy expansion
During the recent CERAWeek conference in Houston, leading technology companies Amazon, Google, and Meta, along with 11 other major energy consumers like Dow and Occidental, signed the Large Energy Users Pledge. This initiative, backed by the World Nuclear Association (WNA), aims to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050.

The pledge acknowledges the increasing energy demand driven by economic growth and the need for a stable, reliable power supply. The signatories commit to tripling global nuclear energy capacity by 2050, emphasizing its role in strengthening energy security, resilience, and continuous clean power generation. They recognize that large-scale industries rely on a consistent energy supply for cost-effective operations and highlight nuclear energy’s advantage of providing round-the-clock power, unaffected by weather, seasonal changes, or geographical limitations. Additionally, they stress the importance of safe and firm energy sources like nuclear in building a diversified and dependable energy grid.
The pledge further underscores the broad applications of nuclear technology beyond electricity generation, such as supporting industrial electrification, high-temperature process heat, hydrogen production, district heating, and synthetic fuel development. The signatories advocate for equitable financial access for nuclear and other energy sources to enable large-scale deployment globally, calling on governments to create supportive policies. They also encourage other major energy-consuming companies to join the initiative, reinforcing nuclear energy’s crucial role in meeting future energy demands while ensuring a clean and stable power supply for industries worldwide.

Global support for nuclear expansion
Prior to this pledge, 31 countries, 140 nuclear industry companies, and 14 major global banks had already committed to the goal of tripling nuclear capacity by 2050. This widespread support underscores a collective recognition of nuclear energy's role in achieving energy resiliency, security, and a continuous clean energy supply.
Preceded by the signing of a declaration at COP28 in 2023 by the World Nuclear Association and Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, the pledge to triple global nuclear capacity aligns with growing energy needs. Nuclear currently provides 9% of global electricity from 439 reactors, while energy demand is expected to rise by 4% annually, according to the IAEA.
Prior to this pledge, 31 countries, 140 nuclear industry companies, and 14 major global banks had already committed to the goal of tripling nuclear capacity by 2050.
Over the past year, more energy-intensive companies, anticipating rising demand, have announced nuclear investments to meet their needs while cutting emissions. The surge in AI and data center energy use has driven interest in small modular reactors and large-scale nuclear projects, with industries recognizing nuclear’s role in decarbonizing processes.
