The Spanish company IDOM has signed a new contract for ITER, the international nuclear fusion project

The consortium composed by the Foro Nuclear member IDOM and the French company ALSYMEX has signed a contract with Fusion for Energy (F4E), the organization in charge of the European contribution to ITER, the international research project on nuclear fusion.

The main purpose of this contract is to develop a system that will be key to this experimental reactor making it possible to raise the plasma temperature up to the 150 million degrees Celsius needed to achieve fusion inside the reactor, and also to inject heat into areas of the plasma in order to avoid instability and interruptions that could cause cooling and compromise the machine's operation.

Work is expected to last six years, and could reach a total cost of approximately 100 million euros, publicly funded by the European Union through F4E.

IDOM reinforces its participation in ITER, considered the most important energy research project in the 21st Century

About ITER

ITER stands for Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, and its located in Cadarache, southern France. It is the world's largest scientific experiment, with the participation of 35 nations. It aims to prove that it is technologically possible to use nuclear fusion as a source of energy, just as it is generated in the Sun or the stars.

The ITER experimental project is of crucial importance to the development and implementation of future nuclear fusion commercial reactors

Fusion technology is of key importance for a future of safe and clean energy without greenhouse emissions. It will contribute to the support of energy independence in Europe, and to guaranteeing electric supply helping in the fight against climate change.

Spain's participation in ITER

Spain actively participates in ITER: around 50 Spanish companies have been rewarded over 100 contract for a total of over 600 million euros in outstanding projects for ITER.
