The Spanish nuclear safety council has received a request for a mandatory report on the life extension of Almaraz nuclear power plant
The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council, Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear (CSN), has received—via the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO)—a request to issue a preceptive report regarding a modification of the operating license for both units of the Almaraz nuclear power plant.
On October 30, the owners of Almaraz asked MITECO to modify its operating license in order to allow operation of both units until June 8, 2030. This request has now been forwarded to CSN for the corresponding binding report.
Once issued by the regulator, this report will be sent back to MITECO to facilitate the Ministry's informed decision on whether to allow the plant to continue operating.

According to the law that created CSN, the regulator is the entity responsible for issueing these mandatory reports to the ministry, covering nuclear safety, radiological protection and physical protection, before granting any authorization for nuclear sites.
As stated by CSN president Juan Carlos Lentijo, the regulator's decision will always be guided by technical criteria, strictly based on the nuclear safety of the site as well as the radiological protection of citizens and the environment.

Under the Regulation on Nuclear and Radioactive Sites, CSN must issue its report at least two months before the expiration date of the current authorization. For Almaraz, the current licenses expire on November 1, 2027 for unit I and October 31, 2028 for unit II.
