What is Cherenkov radiation?

Cherenkov radiation is a phenomenon visible as a blue glow that occurs when charged particles, such as electrons or protons, exceed the speed of light in certain media like water. This effect is named after Pavel Cherenkov, who, along with Ilya Frank and Igor Tamm, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1958 for discovering and explaining this phenomenon.

How is it possible to exceed the speed of light?

While the speed of light in a vacuum is unsurpassable, in other media such as water light slows down to 75% of its speed in a vacuum. Under these conditions, charged particles can travel faster than light in that medium, producing the characteristic blue glow.

Why is it blue?

When these particles exceed the speed of light in a medium, they disrupt the energy of the atoms they pass through. The atoms emit photons as they stabilize, creating a light shockwave perceived as blue or violet due to the high frequency and short wavelength of the emitted photons. This phenomenon is analogous to the sonic boom caused by an object exceeding the speed of sound.

Applications of Cherenkov radiation

Cherenkov radiation commonly occurs in water surrounding radioactive materials, such as the fuel pools of nuclear reactors. The blue glow can be measured using specialized instruments like digital Cherenkov radiation observation devices to verify the peaceful use of nuclear materials.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) employs this technique to ensure states comply with safeguards agreements and do not divert nuclear materials for military purposes. Inspectors analyze radiation data in nuclear fuel storage pools and compare it with the reports submitted by the states.

Using Cherenkov radiation observation instruments, this phenomenon can be detected to confirm compliance with safeguards ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear materials
