Nuclear results 2025: a solid sector facing the energy future
The current president of Foro Nuclear, Marta Ugalde, has presented her first annual report at the helm of the association, highlighting the strategic role of nuclear energy in an international context marked by the need to reduce emissions and ensure security of supply. Below is the content of the letter accompanying this publication, updated with the latest nuclear performance results.
Letter of Marta Ugalde, president at Foro Nuclear, presenting the publication "2025. Nuclear results and future perspectives"
"I address the readers of this annual report for the first time with the responsibility and honour that come with assuming the presidency of Foro Nuclear. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude for the confidence that the General Assembly of Members has placed in me.
After 25 years of dedication to this sector, it is a true privilege to represent an industry recognized for its excellence, technical rigor and strategic value—particularly at this decisive moment when nuclear power is once again emerging as a key pillar of the global energy future.
“At Foro Nuclear we will continue working to ensure that the Spanish nuclear fleet can operate over the long term”
Long term operation
I take on, with full dedication, the responsibility of defending the interests of the whole of the nuclear sector. At Foro Nuclear we will continue working to ensure that the Spanish nuclear fleet can operate over the long term, in line with international standards that grant operating licenses of up to 80 years, including reactors that are reference plants of ours.Long-term operation is not only a viable option; it is a strategic and safe decision.
The year 2025 was marked by decisive factors that have directly influenced the evolution of the energy sector. A recent report from the International Energy Agency shows that nuclear energy is experiencing a true renaissance, driven both by demand dynamics and by the pressing need to reduce emissions in a context of accelerated economic and technological growth.
“Nuclear energy is experiencing a true renaissance”
In this scenario, Spain’s nuclear power plants are now more than ever consolidating their role as essential assets for the stability and reliability of the electricity system. In 2025 they accounted for more than 19% of total generation and operated according to the highest quality standards.
Spain has a nuclear fleet that ranks among the most outstanding in the world, supported by a cutting-edge industry and highly qualified professionals, and regarded as a truly strategic asset for Europe.

Precisely for this reason, an energy transition model aimed at reducing emissions cannot do without nuclear energy, a source capable of providing continuous electricity without generating CO2 emissions. In 2025, nuclear power accounted for almost 26% of all emissions-free electricity produced in Spain, thereby reaffirming its role as an indispensable ally in the fight against climate change.
At the international level, the strong commitment to nuclear energy is clear. With more than 70 GW under construction and hundreds of planned reactors, the world is moving toward greater energy autonomy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in a complex geopolitical environment.

Countries that chose to exclude this technology now face greater dependence on external energy sources, higher emissions, rising electricity prices and a loss of economic competitiveness—a strategic mistake, according to the European Commission itself.
In short, the world is moving toward greater nuclear capacity because, as highlighted in the Draghi Report, experience shows that without reliable, safe and emissions-free electricity generation it is impossible to ensure either industrial competitiveness or the achievement of climate goals.
In this context, Spain has the opportunity to align itself with the path followed by the most industrialized nations, harnessing the added value that nuclear energy brings to a robust, sustainable and future-oriented energy system.
Almaraz nuclear power plant
I would also like to mention the pivotal moment currently being experienced by the Almaraz nuclear power plant and the 4,000 families and workers in the surrounding area, who are awaiting the decision that would allow its operation to continue until 2030. Maintaining the operation of our nuclear power plants is essential to guarantee a stable electricity supply, strengthen energy autonomy and move decisively toward climate commitments.
I conclude this letter with a message of optimism and my most sincere gratitude for the opportunity the sector has entrusted to me. I invite you to read this publication, which reflects the outstanding performance of our nuclear power plants as well as the work of nuclear companies—the true drivers of a strong industrial fabric that generates wealth and employment and holds strategic international relevance thanks to its capabilities and the commitment and expertise of its professionals".
