20 more years for Clinton nuclear power plants thanks to an agreement between Meta and Constellation Energy

Meta and Constellation Energy have signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply clean, reliable nuclear energy from the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois. The deal ensures the continued operation of the Clinton facility well beyond 2027, replacing expiring state subsidies with a market-based solution that supports decarbonization and energy security, explains Constellation Energy in a press release.

Under the agreement, Meta will purchase 1,121 megawatts of emissions-free nuclear energy annuallyenough to match the electricity needs of its data centers and operations. This move aligns with Meta’s goal to match 100% of its electricity consumption with clean and renewable energy. The deal also enables a 30-megawatt capacity increase at the plant through efficiency upgrades.

The nuclear power plant in United States is a “twin” of the Cofrentes nuclear power plant in Spain. Cofrentes, despite having similar capabilities and a solid safety record, is scheduled for closure in november 2030.

The Clinton nuclear plant is a “twin” to Spain’s Cofrentes facility, which is set to close in 2030 despite having similar potential and safety performance

“This agreement is a model for how companies can partner to keep zero-carbon nuclear energy on the grid,” said Joe Dominguez, president and CEO of Constellation. “It provides a practical, market-based path forward for reliable clean energy.”

The partnership has substantial environmental and economic benefits. By keeping the Clinton plant in operation, the deal avoids approximately 34 million metric tons of carbon emissions over 20 years—the equivalent of removing 7.4 million gasoline-powered cars from the road for a year. It also preserves over 1,100 well-paying local jobs and maintains about $13.5 million in annual tax contributions to schools and local services. Constellation has also pledged $1 million in charitable contributions to local nonprofits over the next five years.

Meta’s vice president of global energy, Urvi Parekh, said the company’s focus is on meeting rising energy demands—particularly from AI and data centers—without increasing carbon emissions. “We are proud to partner with Constellation on a solution that helps support the continued operation of an emission-free nuclear plant and brings additional carbon-free energy to the grid,” she said.

This agreement reflects a broader shift among major technology firms seeking long-term, carbon-free power. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are all exploring similar strategies, using nuclear as a stable clean energy source to meet growing demands from digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence.

In addition to the Clinton deal, Constellation is evaluating new clean energy investments at the site, including the potential deployment of advanced nuclear reactors or small modular reactors (SMRs). These technologies could further enhance the region’s role as a clean energy hub.

The Clinton plant’s continued operation exemplifies the value of collaborative, private-sector-led approaches to clean energy, energy security, and local economic development. As nations grapple with decarbonization goals and rising electricity demand, the Clinton-Meta agreement offers a replicable model—while also raising critical questions about why high-performing plants like Cofrentes are being decommissioned elsewhere despite their continued value.
