Amphos 21 is in charge of engineering for the coverage of radioactive waste at the El Cabril storage center

Amphos 21, a strategic and environmental consulting company in the RSK Group, announced that they have been appointed by Enresa, Spain's national radioactive waste company, to take on the I+D project for the engineering of the coverage of radioactive waste at the El Cabril, storage center in Cordova (Spain).

Amphos 21, a member of Foro Nuclear, has expressed their satisfaction with this achievement. Their cooperation in this project is planned for the next four years. In the company's words, they feel "very proud to have the opportunity to contribute to the project and to use our scientific and technical expertise to develop a definitive and safe solution for the radioactive waste in Spain."

The El Cabril storage center stores very low, low and intermediate level radioactive waste from Spanish nuclear power plants, hospitals and research centers. As a protection measure, the storage sstem uses natural and engineered barrieres to safely isolate the materials. As Enresa explains on its webpage, El Cabril "will be sealed with a final cover made up of various drainage and waterproofing layers and topped with a final layer of topsoil to enable integration into the environment."

In this new project, Amphos 21 will implement monitoring systems at the current storage cells. It will also design and supervise several laboratory tests. The goal is to develop advanced numerical models to simulate the long-term performance of several cover designs, and propose the best solution for future imprementation at an industrial scale.
