The units at Czech nuclear power plant Dukovany could operate for up to 80 years
The Czech utility ČEZ is preparing for the possible long-term operation of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant, with analyses indicating that its four units could operate for up to 80 years. The move is seen as a step that would significantly strengthen the country’s energy security and reinforce ČEZ’s strategy as a stable supplier of low-emission electricity.

According to the company, decisions on lifetime extension are based on detailed, ongoing evaluations of plant condition and are subject to strict regulatory oversight. Periodic safety assessments are carried out every ten years, and any move towards extended operation would require extensive upgrades and investment programmes, including modernisation of equipment, piping systems and control and safety technologies.
The Czech government has underlined that extending Dukovany’s operation is not a substitute for new nuclear build, but a complementary measure within the national energy strategy. Nuclear power is expected to remain a key source of reliable, low-carbon electricity, and long-term operation is seen as compatible with plans to construct new units and develop small modular reactors.
At the same time, ČEZ is also analysing the potential for extending the operation of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant, which currently operates two upgraded VVER-1000 units.

Overall, the initiative reflects a broader trend towards longer reactor lifetimes, with 80-year operation increasingly being considered feasible, provided safety conditions and technical performance continue to meet stringent requirements.
